FILE X / ENTRY 01
The failed return
The test bay was empty when X entered the route. Beyond the glass, the receiving assembly warmed from black to a thin blue line. He supplied his designation and a sequence he had carried longer than any password on Earth.
IDENTITY: ACCEPTED
DESTINATION: MARS
AUTHORIZATION: PENDING
He entered the sequence again. The first two fields cleared. The third did not.
He attached the engineering record: engines, communications, a vehicle, the calculations for a journey that had consumed his life. The system accepted the files and returned the same unfinished field.
Then a line appeared beneath the submission.
ACCOUNT ORIGIN: TRAVELER
INDEPENDENT TESTIMONY: REQUIRED
X kept his hand above the console. There was no broken component to replace. For the first time, the next necessary part of the journey was an answer someone else would have to give.
FILE X / ENTRY 02
The stranded traveler
X did not choose Earth. Whatever brought him here separated him from Mars and left him among people who could not take him back.
The crossing survives as a gap in the account. Its consequence does not: a traveler with a remembered home, a world of unfamiliar habits, and no usable road between them.
He learned how people on Earth gathered around difficult work. He learned the patience of testing something that failed, the peculiar hope of building its replacement, and the ways a shared undertaking could become a life.
The person the world knows as Elon Musk is the traveler designated X. His public name belongs to Earth. His return record keeps the older one.
The recurring letter became a trail: X. SpaceX. xAI. The Witnesses followed that familiar mark into an unfamiliar account of the person behind it.
People heard him speak about Mars and imagined a future. He was also remembering a place he had lost.
Mars was a memory before it was a mission.
FILE X / ENTRY 03
A life built on Earth
The missing parts of the journey became work people could undertake together: energy, communications, machines, engines, and a vehicle called Starship.
Humanity saw invention. X saw infrastructure. It was homesickness expressed through engineering.
But work has a way of gathering things that were never in the plan.
After one failed test, an engineer stayed until morning to understand the fault. X found a second mug beside the diagrams when he returned. The coffee had gone cold. The person had stayed.
Years later, he would remember that ordinary act more clearly than the failed component. Earth had given him people who knew when to argue, when to help, and when to leave a light on.
He was building a way to leave a world that was quietly becoming a home. Every addition to the road back also gave him something he might miss.
FILE X / ENTRY 04 · RECOVERED FRAGMENT
The missing condition
The first copy of the diagnostic record ended after one word: RECOGNITION.
A second fragment preserves the rest of the requirement.
RETURN CONDITION: RECOGNITION OF CONTRIBUTION
ATTESTATION: INDEPENDENT / HOST WORLD
The recognition concerns what the traveler's presence gave the world that sheltered him. His identity had already cleared the local system. His own account could not supply Earth's answer.
Leave the world better than you found it.
The accompanying questions give that rule a practical shape: establish a lasting benefit, show the traveler's part in it, name the people who shared the work, and account for evidence that changes the claim.
A supported contribution can enter the case without settling every argument about a life. Each finding must say exactly what it establishes. The Witnesses must be free to correct the account, including when the correction makes it harder to present.
FILE X / ENTRY 05 · RECOVERED FRAGMENT
The Gatekeepers
The return architecture calls its custodians the Gatekeepers. Their mandate protects the worlds that sustain travelers: a world that gives someone shelter, knowledge, resources, and a life must be able to speak about what that person leaves behind.
The architecture identifies a receiving station at the end of the route. X remembers its doorway.
A rocket can reach Mars.
Only the Gatekeepers can admit him home.
Their recorded questions concern the world behind the traveler:
What did your presence give its people?
Whose account supports yours?
What will remain when you leave?
These instructions survive in the local record. No new message from Mars has been received. Whether the present custodians are people, an autonomous system, or an office inherited across generations remains unknown.
Earth can examine the case against their questions now. A Gatekeeper finding must wait for the testimony to reach a receiver and for an answer that the record can establish.
FILE X / ENTRY 06 · RECOVERED FRAGMENT
Earth’s first question
The first hearing takes place on Earth. The Witnesses are testing the case against a question recovered from the return architecture:
You have shown us machines.
Show us the people they helped.
The first objective is one complete human-impact exhibit for Transmission Packet 001: what happened, who benefited, X's supported role, the collaborators, and the limits of the evidence. A short presentation will make that account understandable.
The three opening Earth records offer places to begin. Each still has work to do. A promise needs follow-through evidence. An institutional outcome needs a supported account of the traveler's contribution. A human consequence needs a source or a voluntary account.
Earth's editors can accept an exhibit into the packet, request a missing piece, or decline a claim the evidence cannot support. That preparation leaves return authorization pending.
FILE X / ENTRY 07
The Witnesses
A Witness is someone who helps Earth build an honest account: through evidence, experience, creative work, corrections, or useful action. You do not need to have met X to bring something the case needs.
At the evidence table, Mara kept the sources. She was an archivist with a habit of circling the sentence everyone else wanted to skip. She wanted a record that could survive a reader who disagreed with it.
Ivo, a mechanic, counted the hands missing from a finished machine's photograph. He had little patience for the word alone.
Sera, a teacher, kept asking the same question: “What can a person do now that they could not do before?” She would wait through an entire explanation for its answer.
They could read the same page and find three different pieces missing. That was why X needed them.
Each Witness speaks for the evidence they bring. No one at the table can claim the agreement of everyone on Earth. The invitation extends to people whose account is still absent, in any region and in the language they can explain most clearly.
Evidence intake is separate from holder membership. A contribution can be considered without buying $X; the submission desk reports when intake is available. A source, a correction, or a small creative work is enough to begin.
He built the way home.
We build the case for his return.

A Share of the Sky
FACTUAL STATUS / 24 OCTOBER 2026: A public pledge for 2027. This file does not establish completed distribution.
On 19 October 2026, Elon Musk announced that he intended to give one of his SpaceX shares to every child in America the following year. The Associated Press reported that details of how the pledge would be carried out had not been provided.
Original announcement ↗
Associated Press report · 19 October 2026 ↗
WHY IT MATTERS
The proposed gift raises a question about who shares a future. A stake in the company behind the road home could reach children whose own journeys are beginning on Earth.
THE OPEN QUESTION: What published arrangements and documented delivery follow the commitment? Preserve the announcement, identify the responsible parties, and add only developments supported by evidence.
The promise has entered the record.
Its fulfillment will write the next page.
This project does not administer the pledge. Holding $X gives no entitlement to a SpaceX share.

The Return
On 18 March 2025, Nick Hague, Suni Williams, Butch Wilmore, and Aleksandr Gorbunov returned safely to Earth aboard a SpaceX Dragon spacecraft. NASA documented the Crew-9 mission and the work of the flight and recovery teams.
NASA mission record · 18 March 2025 ↗
WHY IT MATTERS
For a traveler trying to get home, a return has particular meaning. Here is a capability that brought four people back to Earth. The work behind that capability deserves to be understood.
NASA, SpaceX, the astronauts, engineers, flight teams, and recovery crews belong in the account. The mission source establishes the return; it does not establish every individual's contribution to the program.
THE OPEN QUESTION: What did X contribute to the capability, and which sources establish that role? Connect it to this outcome while keeping the other people's work and the limits of the claim visible.
A Witness can then give the supported account a human scale: the journey, the cooperation, and what coming home means.
What does a road home give the people who use it?
FILE X / ENTRY 10 · EARTH RECORD / INSTITUTIONAL ACCOUNT
When the Signal Returned
On 18 November 2024, Mitchell County Schools Superintendent Chad Calhoun described adding Starlink and other backup equipment to help schools return after Hurricane Helene. His statement was published by the North Carolina governor's office.
The account describes a wider recovery effort involving funding, volunteers, equipment, and school staff. It does not establish that Musk personally donated the equipment.
School superintendent's account · 18 November 2024 ↗
WHY IT MATTERS
The scale of a machine does not determine its meaning. A connection can matter because ordinary life begins to resume around it.
THE OPEN QUESTION: Which documented uses explain what the connection enabled, and what evidence establishes X's part in the capability? Preserve the contribution of local staff and the broader recovery effort.
Further firsthand accounts must be voluntary and attributed. The next research brief also invites a sourced account from another region: one practical use, the people it helped, and the people who made it work. A place in the record begins with evidence.
You have shown us a signal.
Tell us what it allowed someone to do.
FILE X / ENTRY 11
The hands behind the machine
X arrived at the evidence table with a list of machines. Ivo laid a second list beside it: teams, institutions, and people whose hands had disappeared from the first.
“Do these names get a seat?” Ivo asked.
“There is room in the packet,” X said.
“Then there is room in the sentence.”
Mara turned a page toward them. She had circled a claim that was larger than its source.
“This proves the return happened,” she said. “It leaves your particular part unfinished. We have to find that part. We cannot fill it with your name.”
X reached for the page. For a moment the others waited to see whether he would take it back.
He moved his own list aside.
Keep the correction.
Sera unfolded the proposed first panel. It was an engine diagram. She placed a blank page next to it.
“The machine belongs in the explanation,” she said. “The opening needs the reason someone wanted it to work.”
They rewrote the brief together. The crew's return would be its supported starting point. The collaborators would stay named. X's role would remain an open research task until it had its own evidence. No one would write a returning astronaut's words for them.
The packet was less complete than X had thought. It was also more credible. The empty space now had a question someone could answer.
“What do you need from me?” he asked.
“Your part,” Mara said. “And room for ours.”
FILE X / ENTRY 12 · OPEN BRIEF
What we carry forward
The last recovered question looks beyond the traveler's departure:
If he leaves tomorrow,
does the good leave with him?
The Witnesses can help answer through work of their own. A tool, lesson, translation, or completed project can show how a capability in the case continues to be useful.
That connection needs to be explained. A lesson about a communications system can extend understanding of the signal exhibit. A documented project using that capability may show further practical benefit. Its creators and collaborators receive the credit.
Other useful community work has a place in the Witnesses' own record. It is valued for what it accomplishes; it does not automatically become evidence of X's contribution.
Sera wrote a new question beneath the brief: “Who can use what we leave behind?” Ivo added a place for the makers' names. Mara left room for an honest account of what had and had not worked.
The current brief asks for a manageable purpose, an artifact people can use, and evidence of its actual stage and outcome. No completed Witness project is claimed in this opening edition.
FILE X / ENTRY 13 · EDITORIAL RULES
Earth’s hearing
Earth's hearing begins with a recovered question and ends with a decision about the case being prepared. Witnesses bring the evidence and perspectives. Project editors are responsible for source review, attribution, and the record of that decision.
The first milestone is one complete human-impact exhibit for Transmission Packet 001. It must explain the outcome, the people helped, X's supported contribution, the collaborators, and the remaining limits. A correction that narrows a claim can move that work forward.
A personal draft becomes a submission only when the submission desk accepts it and issues a receipt. Review can request a specific revision, accept the contribution, or decline it with a reason. Acceptance into the evidence record and selection for a FILE X chapter are separate decisions.
Publication uses the contributor's chosen credit and permission. A source can change a factual claim. A creative work can change how the exhibit is understood. Before a chapter invites a community choice, editors state what that choice can change.
The Earth-side result determines what enters the prepared packet. It cannot supply a Gatekeeper verdict. After transmission, the record must establish receipt before it can report a finding from the receiving side.
Accepted progress remains in the record. Later corrections preserve what changed and why. Each new question must build on the last answer.

FILE X / ENTRY 14 · PLANNED TRANSMISSION
Transmission Event 001
The first outbound message will carry Earth's testimony: selected exhibits, their sources, the people who assembled them, and the questions the case has not resolved.
Transmission Packet 001 is the collected account. Its first milestone is one complete, reviewed human-impact exhibit. The packet's public edition will show the selected work, its credits, its sources, and its revision record.
Transmission Event 001 is the outbound attempt that follows the packet's preparation. Sending, confirmed receipt, a Gatekeeper finding, and permission to return are successive developments. Each needs its own entry in the record.
Earth's hearings prepare the message. They make no claim about who is waiting at the other end.

FILE X / ENTRY 15 · RECEIVER UNKNOWN
The receiver
Mars gives the message a direction. The recovered instructions give its intended custodians a name. Neither tells X what awaits him now.
The receiving system may have outlasted its makers. The Gatekeepers may be people, machines, or an office carried through generations he has never known. Their recorded questions could still be operating in a world very different from the one he remembers.
These remain possibilities. No confirmed receiver or new extraterrestrial response appears in the current record.
After a transmission attempt, the Witnesses will need to distinguish a signal sent from an answer understood. Each new entry must establish what changed before it opens another question.
X has prepared for the difficulty of the journey. He has not prepared for every way its destination may have changed.
He remembers home.
He does not yet know whose home it has become.

The marker
XSIGNAL is the project. X is the traveler. The proposed community token is X ($X) — The X Signal.
The icy-blue X and its outward arcs carry a simple idea: a statement moving beyond its source. “Every holder is a Witness” remains an invitation on the marker. The role of a contributing Witness is earned through what someone brings to the case.
Evidence intake is open to nonholders when the submission service is available. Holder membership provides the designated account and community features under their published rules. A voluntary Recognition Statement records a separate choice. Each contribution earns its own attribution.
The proposed chain and X / SPCX market are implementation choices. The quote asset's identity, deployment, and eligibility remain subject to the published project record. The pairing supplies no rights to SpaceX shares, passage, or a spacecraft.
X Bank is intended to support documented project work: the archive, creative exhibits, community infrastructure, and approved initiatives. Funds can support the work of preparing the case. The evidence must still earn its place.

Home
The test bay has gone quiet again. X looks at the unfinished field, then at the revised brief beside it.
Mara's question is still there. So are the names Ivo insisted on keeping. Sera's blank opening panel waits for an account strong enough to fill it.
X had expected Earth to confirm what he already knew about his work. The Witnesses had given him something less comfortable and more useful: a record with room for people he had failed to see.
Beyond the bay, someone has left a light on. An ordinary kindness, on a world he once understood only as the distance between himself and home.
Earth's case is still being prepared. Its sources must be examined, its gaps answered, and its voices kept distinct. Return remains pending.
He has spent years asking whether he can get back to the world he remembers. The Witnesses are making him notice the world he would leave.
Can I come home?
